Department of Central Sterilization Services (CSSD)
Central Sterilization Services Department is back bone of health services. Team ensures safe sterilization of Linen, Instruments Equipment, consumables etc. Different modes of sterilization are used for medical devices, equipment and consumables essential for delivering infection free safe health services.
CSSD caters to the needs for sterile material for patient care in all areas, outpatient, inpatient, intensive care areas, operation theatre, laboratories in the entire hospital. Linen soiled with vomitus, faeces, blood spill, urine etc have segregation at source, discarded in marked bags. Reusable contaminated linen is segregated, put into 0.5% chlorine solution for 30 min.in linen disinfection bin, (disinfection/ decontamination of soiled/ contaminated linen) and then sent to mechanized laundry from where it comes to CSSD. Unsoiled, reusable linen is packed in zip bags before sending to laundry.
Linen for sterilisation includes drapes, gowns, wrappers, quite a lot considered infectious even if there is no visible stain. Instruments used for major/minor surgeries in OT and other critical areas or in wards are necessarily decontaminated and autoclaved, decontamination, washing, drying, packing and autoclaving in order. All this is ensured in CSSD for best services of global standard.
Equipment, gadgets, essential for effective functioning of CSSD are all available. Reliable electricity distribution with load balancing to various equipment is ensured to prevent electric fire hazard or damage to the equipment. Fluctuation in voltage also adversely affects the sterilization process, hence automatic voltage regulators maintain constant output voltage. Safe explosion proof plugs, plug connector and sockets are ensured for safety against explosion.
Steam Sterilisers chamber and doors, solid with high quality stainless steel jacketed to ensure temperature uniformity in chamber, provide best of services. Pre-vacuum steam sterilization steam sterilization is in place to utilize vacuum system to eliminate air from the sterilization chambers before introducing steam process to enhances the effectiveness of sterilization by ensuring that steam penetrates all surfaces of the items being sterilized, including complex instruments with lumens or porous materials. Rotary heat sealer gives documentation of process parameters via an integrated printer and is integrated with documentation system to monitor and enforce effectiveness of cleaning, disinfection and sterilization process and safe distribution and back.
Ethylene oxide (ETO), biocide which destroys bacteria, viruses, fungi and other unwanted organisms is used for items that are heat and moisture sensitive anaesthetic tubing, endoscopes etc. Hydrogen peroxide plasma sterilization/hydrogen peroxide gas sterilization, a low temperature sterilization process is also used to sterilize heat-sensitive devices. It requires less time than ethylene oxide sterilization. It involves H2O2 vapor filling the sterilizer chamber, contacting and sterilizing exposed device surfaces that effectively eliminating microorganisms .H2O2 vapor and plasma technology, results in non-toxic by-products.
Quality is ensured not only by physical monitoring displayed screen, but with biological indicators also. Servicing schedule for all equipment is maintained to ensure schedule documentation of each session. Biological monitoring of sterilization process is monitored by physical (time, temperature, pressure), chemical (internal and external indicators) biological methods. Physical and chemical indicators are used ideal monitors of sterilisation process to measure efficacy of sterilization process.
